Wellington Ams swoop for ex-West Brom star Darren Moore
Shropshre side Wellington Amateurs have pulled off a sensational coup – by signing former Premier League star Darren Moore.
Shropshre side Wellington Amateurs have pulled off a sensational coup – by signing former Premier League star Darren Moore.
The 37-year-old, commonly known as 'Big Dave', has agreed to join the West Midlands League Division One leaders to aid their final push to land the title.
Defender Moore, who played in the top flight for West Bromwich Albion and Derby and made five appearances for League Two Burton Albion earlier this season, is lifelong friends with Ams joint-boss Richard Brown.
Moore, who was also close to signing for West Midlands League Premier Division side Cradley Town, is unavailable on Saturdays due to his media commitments following Albion.
But, with Ams having to play 10 games in the next 28 days, midweek appearances are on the cards for a side whom ply their trade seven levels below the Football League.
"I've agreed to sign for them," said Moore, who is approaching 650 professional starts.
"I know Richard really well. We used to play football together as kids and he asked me if I would come over and play for them.
"I can't do Saturdays at the moment because I'm working on radio and follow Albion everywhere.
"But we are old mates so, of course, if I can possibly help him out I will be happy to do so."
Moore and Brown played junior football together in Birmingham before both signed for Walsall as teenagers.
And the Amateurs joint-manager is delighted he will be able to call on Moore over the next month.
"I saw Darren on television and just text him to see if he was still playing and it went from there," said Brown. "We had to put a lot of hard work in but it's great for the club.
"We have told a few of the lads and I think a few of them thought it was a late April Fool's joke!"
Ams are two points clear at the top of the table from Shropshire rivals Hanwood, who they entertain on Monday, but Moore isn't likely to be available.
Moore left Burton, where he was club captain, in February after it was agreed by mutual consent that he quit the Pirelli Stadium.
His contract with the Brewers had been due to expire at the end of this season.
