The Shropshire-raised 26-year-old, a former member of Ludlow Golf Club, carded his best round yet on the prestigious European Tour – a score of 68, with three birdies in the last five holes, seeing him finish on four under.

Farr's level-par first-round 72 included two eagles and a birdie but also a series of bogeys. He was more consistent at the East London Golf Course yesterday, with five birdies and one bogey. Going into round three today, Farr was in joint 24th place.

The African Open has been won by 'home' golfers for the last five successive years but is currently being led by England's Matt Ford.

Among the big names taking part is newly-appointed European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke who is tied with Farr on four under and is the professional at Astbury Hall Golf Club, near Bridgnorth.
