Two second-half goals from Freddie Hinds were enough for the Hatters, despite Chris Gallagher's late penalty giving the hosts hope.

After a bright start from Shrewsbury, the visitors grew into the final and created the first opportunity, coming within inches of going ahead.

Freddie Hinds found Alex Atkinson and the latter flashed an impressive 20-yard strike against the post with Charlie Bannister beaten.

James Justin fired over from 30-yards as the Hatters continued to dominate the possession.

Luton's Jack Snelus dinked a cross-shot right across Bannister's goal, but forward Hinds could not quite get on the end of it.

The hosts burst into life as the first-half entered stoppage time, first Liam Gooch was on-hand in the Luton goal to keep out Ethan Jones' fierce low strike, before the shot-stopper then denied Jack Watts after a good Jones break.

The Hatters were the quicker out of the second-half and following some nice build-up from Justin, Tyreeq Bakinson bent an effort over the top from 20-yards.

An error of judgement from Salop skipper Callum Grogan allowed the visitors to break the deadlock, Justin's long ball from deep was helped into the path of Hinds by Grogan and the lively striker finished well.

Luton had their tails up and almost added a second moments later as Kavan Cotter's strike flew over via a deflection.

Jones almost tied things up from the tightest of angles but Gooch denied him well before Bannister kept out Kavan Cotter at the other end.

Shrewsbury sub George Hassall came close to an equaliser as his sharp turn and snapshot from outside the area flew narrowly wide.

The visitors had their second through the impressive Hinds, who collected a ball from Cotter on the right side of the box before turning the home defender inside out and finishing underneath Bannister.

With 12 minutes to play Hatters sub Kyran McGhan-George upended home sub Charley Higgs and Gallagher buried the spot-kick.

John McAtee's strike from distance was smothered low down by Gooch as the hosts pressed for a dramatic equaliser.
