AFC Telford scorer makes case for defence

Chris Blackburn actually spent a few months playing as a striker, so perhaps his winning goal in Tuesday night's 2-1 win over Kidderminster Harriers should have come as little surprise - even if he did know very little about it!

"It just hit me," admitted the former Wrexham and Chester man of the strike that secured the Bucks three valuable points ahead of tomorrow's visit of leaders Fleetwood.

Blackburn scored three goals in seven appearances during a short loan spell at Nevada Wonders in the fourth tier of United States league back in 2004.

But it is as a defender that Blackburn is making his name for himself at The New Bucks Head after a string of impressive performances since joining in January.

But the 29-year-old is refusing to take all the plaudits for a recent upturn in form that has seen just one defeat in four games.

"Everything was there," said Blackburn. "It isn't a matter that I have brought this or that.

"There are a lot of experienced lads here who have played a lot of games. It's comforting to come into the changing room and see that the boys know what they're doing."

And Blackburn is relishing the chance to tackle league leaders Fleetwood - and end their 23-game unbeaten league run.

"They're spending a bit of money," said Blackburn. "But it doesn't give them any right to come here and expect to beat us. It's a game of football and we can win it.

"It's a league where I think anyone can beat anyone. It will be a really good test against Fleetwood. There are no world-beaters in this league. The players are at this level for a reason and any team can beat any other on their day."

And the centre back, who was named captain in the absence of injured skipper Shane Killock in midweek, is now looking up the table rather than down, after Telford rose to 16th following Tuesday night's success.

"We don't just want to stay up by a point or a goal," added Blackburn.

"We want to put a little bit of a run together and kick on for next year. We want to finish the season on a high."
