Aaron Williams told to prove himself at AFC Telford

Striker Aaron Williams has today been told he is welcome to try to earn a place in Liam Watson's AFC Telford squad in pre-season.

But the Bucks manager does not want to be heavily reliant on trialists and he is aiming to have the vast majority of his team in place by the time the first day of training arrives on July 2.

Williams, who is currently a free agent, played 10 games for Telford at the end of last season on loan from former club Walsall.

The 19-year old impressed during that time, scoring his first senior goal in a 5-2 defeat at Woking in March before bagging a hat trick in the Bucks' 3-1 win at Ebbsfleet in April.

Watson, who arrived at the New Bucks Head at the start of May, did not see Williams play during that spell and he already has several options in the striking department having signed Tony Gray, Adam Farrell and Andy Owens in the close season, along with wingers Mike Phenix and Sean Cooke who can also play up front.

But he said he had spoken with Williams' agent and he has no qualms about him trying to stake a claim for a deal with the Bucks.

He said: "Aaron is looking for a club. I haven't seen him play, but he can come and do pre-season, no problem."

There are likely to be a number of trialists keen to try out for the club in pre-season.

But Watson has reiterated his desire to have the vast majority of his team in place by that time to allow his new-look squad time to gel ahead of the new campaign – in which promotion will be the aim.

And Watson will be going the extra mile to encourage a sense of togetherness within the squad, which has undergone an overhaul this summer, as well as to develop the bond between the club and its supporters.

And the former Southport boss has today announced he will walk the 85-mile distance from Telford to Conwy ahead of the game with Bucks chairman Lee Carter, director Mark Berry and Bucks fans Stephen White, Joe Heppenstall and Tom Lewis.

They are aiming to raise at least £8,500 for the club and charity Telford Crisis Network.

Watson, assistant boss Dominic Morley and the players will also meet at an open day on July 13.
