Liam Watson in the market for new AFC Telford signings

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson missed last night's 2-1 friendly victory at Chester to run the rule over a player figuring in Nantwich's visit of Chorley.

Assistant boss Dominic Morley took the team at the Deva Stadium, where the Bucks ran out winners through a goal from Sean Cooke and a Tony Gray penalty.

Watson was taking in an Evo-Stik Northern Premier League fixture where Chorley prevailed 1-0, with the resurgent Mat Bailey playing as a late substiute for the home side.

The towering 6ft 7in former Crewe man rehabbed at Telford over the summer from a cruciate ligament injury, before returning to the club he left in the close season.

Watson is planning to offer the 27-year-old a deal when he is convinced he is fully fit but that wasn't the sole reason for his visit to Nantwich, Morley revealed.

He said: "Liam was watching Nantwich last night but it wasn't just to see Mat Bailey, he was watching some else on a recommendation he had.

"We are not actively looking for signings but we are always on the look-out for better players, if they can fit into the club's budget.

"There's nothing wrong with a bit of window shopping for when the need arises."

Telford defender Dan Preston, who has been transfer listed at his own request, didn't start at Chester last night as he was stuck in traffic.

The 22-year-old didn't arrive until the team were going through their pre-match warm up, so was introduced for Neill Byrne at half-time.

Morley said: "Dan got stuck in traffic, he eventually got there just as the team were warming up. I thought it best to let him warm up through the half.

"We didn't have a team coach going last night so the lads travelled separately, so he was driving up from Birmingham on his own.

"It's just one of those things that can happen. He would have started, though."

Cooke's strike from the edge of the area in the second-half last night was his first for the Bucks in any game since joining the club in the summer.

He then turned provider to win the penalty after he was tripped by Ash Williams, Gray converting from the spot. Lewis Turner pulled one back for Chester.
