AFC Telford's Andy Owens targets double-figures for next season
AFC Telford United striker Andy Owens today targeted becoming a double-figure striker next season after signing a new contract – when he's not 'winging it.'
The 24-year-old has since put pen to paper on a new one-year deal for the Bucks' return to the Skrill Conference Premier.
Owens got seven goals for the Conference North champions, all but one coming from February, and was also used at left-back and on the wing by manager Liam Watson.
The forward said: "The gaffer has mentioned to me that if we do play with certain formations, he will utilise me on the left and I am happy with that, as I have done it before.
"The rest of the time, I will be playing up front and I have to get the goals. Last season was my first mainly being used as a striker and it took me time to adapt.
"Individual achievement wise, I want to show what I have learned and a good target would be to get into double figures this time."
Going up a division will mean players need to spend more time devoted to the club, particularly on long away trips where overnight stays will be needed.
It shouldn't affect Owens too much, though, as he's entering the second year of a university course in sports science.
He said: "I welcome the step up and playing in the Conference Premier won't affect me too much, with my studies. It's mainly Fridays we need to be free and I don't have lessons that day.
"Liam will keep the same sort of training and time schedules that we had when we were at Southport. I have played at full-time before, so I know how fit you need to be at this level.
"I am looking forward to it and I actually think it will be easier for some of the lads to play at the step above. The one thing you do get is a lot more time on the ball in the Premier.
"Decision making is crucial, that's what we need to be very good at and not waste possession, rather than just reacting."
