Liam Watson feels heat of AFC Telford start
AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson today stated defensive signings are his priority – as he admitted to feeling the pressure of the club's poor start.
The Bucks boss is desperate to add a left-back and central defender, preferably before this Saturday's home game with Torquay United.
Watson is aiming to shore up a back-line which has shipped goals on an alarming scale so far this season.
Telford have conceded 30 goals in their opening 11 Conference Premier games, have won none of them and sit rock bottom of the division.
And Watson admits it's only natural to feel the pressure after such a disappointing start, saying: "Of course, it has been tough. You are used to winning.
"But, as I have said, I have been in a rut before, when you are top of the league you pick the team and when you are struggling you manage.
"There is a big difference. I am trying to pick people up but I think there is a phrase, who motivates the motivator?
"On Saturday (after the 5-0 defeat at FC Halifax) I thought it was more important I spent the time with the players, rather than going out to face the press.
"People forget there are a lot of players who have never played at this level before."
Finding a new left-back is the target, with Chris Lever poised to join Bradford Park Avenue and Andy Owens also being told he can move on.
The latter did play the full 90 minutes in Tuesday's 6-1 Shropshire Senior Cup win over Market Drayton Town.
Watson said: "We wanted to get Tuesday out of the way first. We still had a few options. We probably could do with a central defender but we definitely need a left-back of some description.
"We are just juggling things about at the moment."
