Liam Watson targets defenders for AFC Telford
AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson is urging his fired-up players to kick on from victory this week – as he closes in on signing defensive reinforcements.
His team host Chester tomorrow night looking to build on winning a seven-goal New Bucks Head thriller against Torquay on Saturday – their first Conference Premier triumph of the season.
Four goals were needed, against a Gulls defence that hadn't conceded in more than 550 minutes of play, to net the spoils. The Bucks defensive frailties were on show, particularly from set-pieces.
Watson said: "We conceded from three set-pieces, but I can't really recall Hedgey (goalkeeper Jonathan Hedge) being worked, so I suppose that's a disappointing thing. But 4-3, you take a win anyway it comes.
"We've got a game against Chester now and we've got to make sure we are up for it like we were on Saturday."
On defensive targets, Watson said: "I have been speaking to a couple of players.
"We do need to strengthen. In effect, we're playing three centre-halves and we've only got three at the club, so we need additions.
"A little bit of luck in the week and, who knows, by the end we might have a couple in."
Watson praised his side's never-say-die attitude as bottom-of-the-league Telford clipped the wings of a Gulls outfit flying high towards the top of the table.
The Telford boss said: "We had nothing to lose and probably nobody gave us chance.
"They had been having a good run and hadn't conceded a goal in a month, winning six on the spin.
"But we've got some good players and we haven't had a lot of luck, and things have gone against us.
"When you're winning games at the top of the league all you've got to do is pick teams, but when you're at the bottom you've got to manage. The last couple of weeks have been tough.
"First half hour we looked the better team and it was so important we got that equaliser going into half-time. It would have been such a kick in the teeth."
