AFC Telford bidding to seal Craig Roddan deal

AFC Telford United hope to seal a deal for midfielder Craig Roddan today – as they lost out on centre-back Steve Williams and Neill Byrne paid to leave!

Liverpool academy graduate Roddan, 22, was due at the New Bucks Head to thrash out a deal with manager Steve Kittrick at training after impressing in both sessions this week.

Roddan, who was released from Anfield after six years last summer, spent part of last season with League Two side Accrington Stanley following a one-match loan spell with Carlisle.

He joined Evo-Stik Northern Premier League outfit Witton Albion in February after failing to play at Stanley.

Kittrick believes he can complement his other central midfielders as his enforcer in the middle of the park.

"He's been recommended to us and he's got a great pedigree having spent so long at Liverpool," said the boss.

"He went to Carlisle but didn't really get a look-in and then at Accrington the manager left, then he had a few games for Witton.

"He's coming down today and we're going to have a chat to see what he wants.

"Negotiating with players is like a tennis match – its to and fro but there's a deal on the table and if we can get it done, great. He's told me what he wants and I've gone away to have a look at it and, if we can meet somewhere in the middle, he'll be a good addition."

Meanwhile, Telford target Williams, 28, has rejected a move to the New Bucks Head in favour of joining Conference side Barrow.

"Steve has decided to go to Barrow," said Kittrick. "He wants full-time football and he wants to stay in the Conference, which are two things I can't offer him."

Byrne's transfer to League Two Macclesfield was finally set to go through last night after he resurfaced following a trip to Ireland – and agreed to pay his own fee.

He left with a flea in his ear from Kittrick after breaking his two-year deal at Telford.

"I left it to the club because I got fed-up of dealing with it," said the boss. "It was messing everyone around, including himself, and he got himself in a right tangle.

"I think there's a fee but it's not being paid by the club – he's paying it himself.

"And if he's signed a contract I'd urge him to understand what he's doing because he signed a very good two-year deal with us and after a year wanted out.

"But we've been reasonable andworked very hard to get an agreement that's manageable to him when other clubs would have fined him every time he failed to turn up to train."
