By an astonishing quirk, one of Town's biggest games in modern history — the play-off semi-final second leg against Torquay — has fallen on the exact day of the club's 125th anniversary.

It is widely accepted Town was officially formed at the Turf Hotel on Thursday May 20, 1886. And Graham Turner's side will have plenty of backing as they aim to ensure the birthday celebrations go with a bang.

Around 8,000 tickets had been sold for Friday's decider this morning, with the South and West stands virtually sold out.

But hopes of eclipsing the record of 8,817 - set in the final game of the season against Oxford - appear slim with Torquay expected to sell around half of their 1,200 allocation.

Meanwhile, Town officials are hoping for a special atmosphere to roar their side on to victory.

"We want a party atmosphere and the fact it's our 125th anniversary on the same day will just add to that," said community development manager Martin James.
