Former Shrewsbury Town striker Nathan Elder is hoping to put himself back on collision course with his old club next season.

Elder has gone on trial with Town's League Two rivals Cheltenham as he attempts to earn a deal to revive his career.

The 26-year-old spent two seasons at Shrewsbury but saw his progress heavily restricted by a serious knee injury suffered on loan at AFC Wimbledon which ruled him out for almost a year.

Elder reached a mutual agreement with Town on the final 12 months of his contract in June to leave himself hunting for another club.

Another of the players released by Shrewsbury in the summer, young full back Danny Taylor, has signed for Welsh Premier League side Airbus.

Meanwhile, Town's youngsters are due to take centre stage on Monday night when they travel to take on The New Saints in the semi-final of the Shropshire Senior Cup.

The timing of the fixture so early in the pre-season programme has led to boss Graham Turner deciding to send the Town youth team to Park Hall.

And Head of Youth Dave Hughes has admitted building up fitness and player development will be the key factors for his side.

"We have only been back six days so it's very early but the Shropshire FA have insisted the game take place now," said Hughes.

"We would normally spend this time bedding the second years back in and letting the first years know what we expect and what we are looking for.

"We will do our best but the most important things for me are that we don't pick up any injuries and the players do the right things and get the ball down and look to pass it."

Town's senior squad were today completing a three-day training camp at RAF Shawbury.

  • Northampton have completed the signings of winger Lewis Young, midfielder Nick McCoy and goalkeeper Freddy Hall on one-year contracts.
