The 20-year-old left-back, who was a regular in Wanderers' under-21s team, put pen to paper on a one-year deal with Town this morning.

Turner said: "Alex impressed in two reserve matches on trial and we have had him watched in Bolton's development squad.

"He can play left side and centre-half."

Five players have already been told by the Town Boss they will not be offered new contracts at the Greenhous Meadow.

Captain Matt Richards, strikers Marvin Morgan and Ryan Doble, winger Mark Wright and utility player Rob Purdie are heading out of the exit.

But offers have been made to attackers Jon Taylor and Tom Bradshaw, defenders Jermaine Grandison and Connor Goldson and midfielders Aaron Wildig and Ryan Woods.

Turner admitted that the decision to axe senior players had been difficult, but he needs to free up space in his squad.

He said: "I need to change some players, we have got to change like for like. I felt there was need for change in the midfield.

"It can be a shock for some of the players, but others can read the script if they have been in the game for a lengthy time.

"Most of those who have not been offered contracts played a significant part over the last two years and I am sure they will get offers."

Turner stressed that all six players offered fresh terms have no longer than a month to put pen to paper.
