Connor Goldson ready to fill Shrewsbury Town's midfield void
Shrewsbury Town coach Mike Jackson believes defender Connor Goldson would have 'no problem' filling the midfield void this weekend at Peterborough.
Goldson may be asked to slot into the middle of the park on Saturday to cover injured central midfielder Luke Summerfield's absence.
The 20-year-old Wolverhampton-born stopper has made his name at the club as a centre-half and right-back but he played the last 20 minutes of last weekend's 2-0 win over Gillingham in midfield and he was given a 90-minute run-out in the same position for the reserves against Walsall on Tuesday.
And asked if he felt Goldson was capable of filling the same role again against Darren Ferguson's promotion contenders on Saturday, reserve team boss Jackson said: "No problem. You saw what he did on Saturday. I rate Connor, he's got a great chance and if he keeps working at his game he's got a bright future."
Goldson was moved into midfield for the reserves to give manager Graham Turner a further look at him in the middle of the park ahead of Saturday's game and Jackson was sufficiently encouraged by his display.
He said: "The gaffer just wanted to have a look at him in midfield on Tuesday. I think sometimes it is hard for pros like Connor when they come into a reserve team and, no disrespect, some of the players around them aren't on the same level as what they are used to.
"Sometimes he was trying to do too much, to cover too many other people's jobs but it's another game under his belt.
"I don't think you should be judged on reserve team games, you should be judged on first team games.
"And I have got no doubts that if he keeps working at his game and applying himself he will have a good career."
Goldson is not a certainty to start in midfield this weekend, with midfielder Dave McAllister providing another option.
The 24-year-old Irishman started last weekend's victory over Gillingham before being replaced by Goldson. in the 71st minute.
Middlesbrough loanee Adam Reach presents another midfield option although he usually plays out wide.
Summerfield will be Town's only expected injury absence this weekend, with Paul Parry having shaken off a knock on the ankle sustained late on last Saturday.
