It's so Grandison to be back in Shrewsbury team

Shrewsbury Town defender Jermaine Grandison is itching for more games after coming through his first full match in more than a year at the weekend.

Grandison's 90-minute run-out against Port Vale on Saturday was the first time he had completed a full match since January 12 last year.

Since that 1-1 home draw against Hartlepool Grandison had played just five matches – none of them for the full duration – prior to the weekend because of a hip injury.

It required surgery and a long lay-off.

And he took to Twitter following the Vale clash, which ended 0-0, tweeting: "It felt so good to play my first full match in over a year and keep a clean sheet as well. Looking forward to the next game now."

Grandison formed part of a robust-looking back three alongside Tamika Mkandawire and Connor Goldson on Saturday.

And the former Coventry stopper, who can also play full-back, is keen to remain in the centre of defence.

He told the Shropshire Star: "My hip's come through fine. It is feeling good at the moment and I am feeling really confident.

"I think my best position is centre-back. It's where I play best, to be honest, and for me it's not as much running up and down so I think that helps me."

His chances of retaining his place look good – caretaker boss Mike Jackson said: "I thought he was outstanding."

Grandison's inclusion against Vale was one of a handful of surprises thrown up by Jackson's experimental starting XI.

He also handed league debuts to goalkeeper Joe Anyon and new loan signing Miles Storey while benching regulars Chris Weale, Jon Taylor, Dave McAllister and Tom Eaves.

And Grandison said the changes were a positive for players hoping to break into the starting line-up. "I think it sent the message out that it is a fresh start for a lot of players," he said.

"We made a few changes and the lads that came in did really well.

"We have got good character in the dressing room and no matter who is in the squad and who is not, everyone supports each other."
