Micky Mellon's boys completed their third giant killing of the season after a 54th minute James Collins goal secured the win.

It means Town have now beaten Premier League side Leicester as well as Championship outfits Blackpool and Norwich, in the competition where they reached the fifth round back in 1986-87.

Boss Mellon made four changes to the side that could only manage a goal less draw against Newport County on Saturday.

In came Mickey Demetriou, Cameron Gayle, captain Liam Lawrence and James Collins as Shrewsbury switched back to the 3-5-2 formation that has proved so successful this season.

Amongst the Norwich starting line-up was Shropshire-born Elliott Bennett, a former Thomas Telford School pupil.

The Canaries made 11 changes to their side which drew 2-2 against Birmingham on Saturday but still fielded a strong line-up, which featured £5million striker Gary Hooper and ex-Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar.

Town started brightly and forced two corners in the first five minutes, with captain Liam Lawrence looking particularly lively in midfield as he looked to impress Mellon and win his place back in the side.

But, 10 minutes in, the Championship side should have taken the lead. Bennett whipped in a wonderful cross to Kyle Lafferty, who headed over from four yards.

It was a shocking miss from the former Glasgow Rangers striker, who was unmarked and put the ball over the bar when it was easier to score.

But Shrewsbury were passing the ball crisply with Ryan Woods, James Wesolowski and Lawrence working well as a trio and popping the ball around in neat triangles.

The game was proving to be even affair but as the game reached the 25 minute mark Lafferty had another chance to put the away side ahead.

Former Manchester City star Javier Garrido whipped in another cross from the left, but Lafferty mistimed his header when well-placed by the penalty spot.

Town went straight up the other end with Cameron Gayle fouled on the corner of the 18-yard box. Lawrence delivered towards Gayle, who leapt highest, but was just edged out by a Norwich defender.

Buoyed Town started piling on the pressure. Woods and Gayle linked up brilliantly before finding Akpa Akpro – the Norwich defence seeming to part ways for the French striker who fired narrowly wide from 18 yards.

A minute later and Gayle got forward again – the wingback producing a mazy run into the box before shooting straight at goalkeeper Declan Rudd.

Town were now well on top, with the lively Akpa-Akpro drilling another shot that was too close to the Norwich 'keeper.

With the Meadow roaring, Lawrence produced a magical flick which sent the outstanding Wesolowski in on goal but the Australian's shot was deflected over for a corner.

The second-half started in a cagey fashion, but Shrewsbury looked to seize the initiative when Wesolowski rode a challenge and burst towards the box and fed Collins who shot wide.

A minute later, though, Collins made up for the miss. Town won a free-kick on the edge of the box which was whipped in by Lawrence, but only half cleared.

Grandison jumped highest to head the ball towards Collins who looped a header over the goalkeeper and into the net, to send the Salop faithful wild.

As the game ticked over the hour mark, Town went looking for a second with strike partners Collins and Akpa Akpro combining well, before the former Tranmere striker burst into the box to drive a low shot which Rudd saved.

Town were now once again well on top, with Connor Goldson heading over the bar from an inviting Liam Lawrence corner.

Norwich were starting to become frustrated and Lafferty picked up a yellow card for pushing Wesolowski after a brilliant challenge by the tough-tackling Australian.

And, seconds later, Lafferty was at it again. This time, the striker fouling Jermaine Grandison with the referee only giving the forward a talking to when he could have easily been sent off.

Town were flying and Demetriou brilliantly knocking the ball past his marker and delivering a wonderful cross, which was put behind for a corner.

Seconds later, it should have been two. Lawrence slipped in a smart through-ball to Akpa Akpro, who stretched to stab the ball past Rudd but it dropped wide.

Norwich thought they had got back on terms with 10 minutes to go when Bennett's shot was controlled by substitute Cameron King, who tucked it home but the linesman had his flagged for offside.

The away side were now coming forward in numbers and right-back Steven Whittaker hit a low shot across goal, which went narrowly wide.

Goal scorer Collins was replaced by Andy Mangan with five minutes to go, as Mellon made his first change.

With the crowd in outstanding voice, the final five or so minutes passed by fairly comfortably, as Town recorded their third giant-killing of the season with another outstanding performance.
