Town duo unlikely to sign new contracts
Shrewsbury Town admit they probably can't persuade prize assets Connor Goldson and Ryan Woods to sign new deals as they gear up for an anxious August.
And it has emerged that Swindon's offer for Goldson was just £100,000 – not £175,000 plus a player, as Robins chairman Lee Power claimed earlier this week.
Town also want to extend the contract of goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler.
Goldson and Woods are into the last year of their contracts and Town can't afford to offer them better terms as they are up to their budget limit.
Boss Micky Mellon is desperate to re-sign out-of-contract pair Jermaine Grandison and Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro.
But he won't sell his homegrown stars to finance it, and Josh Ginnelly's move to Burnley remains in limbo.
In an ideal world, Town would like to tie Goldson and Woods to the Greenhous Meadow long term to protect their value.
But chief executive Matt Williams admitted: "I've had a couple of people approach me and say 'you need to get Connor and Ryan to sign new deals.'
"If it was that simple we'd do it – they'll have options at the end of the season and they'll still be under 24.
"Let's see what August brings. I suspect whatever we offered Connor and Ryan at the minute, they'd probably turn it down because they're out of contract next summer.
"There's been interest from a Premier League club (West Ham) in Ryan last season and a Championship club (Leeds enquired) for Connor this summer.
"Jayson Leutwiler is another we'd like to tie to a long-term deal but it's not simple. If we can do what we can, we will. But there will be clubs that can pay a lot higher salaries."
