Micky Mellon laments Town defending

Frustrated manager Micky Mellon accused Shrewsbury Town of "committing football suicide" after they crashed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last night.

Town suffered their third straight defeat – all on the road –after another defensive error, Jermaine Grandison gifting Fleetwood the equaliser for substitute Ashley Hunter.

Former Town loanee Bobby Grant then rifled home a spectacular winner on the stroke of full-time, all after Junior Brown had put Salop ahead with an equally superb effort.

Mellon said: "We'll look at every avenue necessary to win more games but we've got to stop committing football suicide if you like by conceding so many cheap goals.

"Jermaine under-hit a back-pass and the lad nipped in and skipped around the goalkeeper and put it in, really from nothing.

"When we gave away the goal and in the manner in which we gave it away, it gave Fleetwood a lift. I think that goal was the turning point.

"We knew they were going to be three difficult games, but if we can cut out the individual errors, we'll give ourselves more of a chance.

"This is what happens at this level – we've been caught out so we're disappointed, and especially at the stage of the game we made the error."

Mellon made eight changes and one of the highlights was the debut of midfielder Ian Black.

The Town boss said: "We had to give Ian Black some time and he looked excellent. He's getting closer to full fitness and he was everything I thought he was going to be.

"Of the other lads, there were good displays at times. It looked like a few of them got tired, probably from lack of match practice, but it will do them no harm."

Brown scored a delightful goal against his former club. "It was a great strike," said Mellon.
