Whalley curled home a superb goal right at the death to clinch a 2-1 victory at Crewe.

The former Luton wideman made it two Shrewsbury wingers on the scoresheet after Larnell Cole's 10th-minute opener was sandwiched by Ryan Colclough's equaliser.

"I can't say I haven't been disappointed because I want to play every game," said Whalley.

"The manager has his reasons and that's fair. I respect him as a manager.

"He gave me my opportunity and hopefully I've taken it and I'll get another chance."

Whalley insisted Shrewsbury Town's play was first class after bagging a spectacular winner in the League One clash.

It was an entertaining, high-tempo game of plenty of chances and Whalley believes some of Salop's play was top-notch.

"I thought we did really well and deserved the win. Some of the stuff we played was first class," said Whalley.

"It was a great goal from Larny – another left-footed goal, like mine on my weaker foot.

"But I thought all the lads were tremendous.

"We battled when we had to battle, kept possession when we had to and scored when we had to.

"It was just good to get the three points.

"It was a big win and it gives us a bit of momentum going into the next game."

Whalley admitted his timing was excellent as Crewe had next to no time on the clock to hit back.

"There aren't many better ways to win a football game than a last-minute winner, no matter who scores it," he said.

"But it rounded the game off nicely and it was great to get it.

"I wanted Jean-Louis to play it in front of me but he played it behind me so I

had to come back on my

left foot and I just thought I'd hit it and luckily it went in."

Whalley hailed his team-mates' battling qualities, adding: "They were on top quite a bit but we dug in and the lads defended brilliantly and we nicked the winner at the end."
