James Wesolowski eager to step into the Lions' Den
James Wesolowski has been backed to make a first-team return for Shrewsbury Town.
The Australian midfielder sailed through 90 minutes in Tuesday's Shropshire Senior Cup final win over AFC Telford United – his first full game since he ruptured his cruciate ligament for the second time last September.
Wesolowski, who scored a 25-yard equaliser against the Bucks, hasn't played at senior level since suffering the injury in the 2-1 win at Barnsley in September.
But the former Leicester and Oldham ball-winner could come into contention for Saturday's trip to Millwall.
"We've got a few games and at least he's put himself in contention to start now," said academy manager Ian Dawes, who was in charge of the team in midweek.
"That will be up to the medical staff and the gaffer but he's definitely able to go into the squad and be up for selection."
Starting with the trip to the New Den, Town have seven games left and are two points clear of the drop zone. Wesolowski is desperate to play his part after so long out.
"It's one of the grounds I haven't played at so I would love to go there," said the 28-year-old.
"It will be a great atmosphere. I think that will help us and get us going.
"We probably need a couple of more wins so the sooner we do that, the better.
"I've only played about 25 games so I owe the club something."
Wesolowski is one of 17 players out of contract this summer and wants to stay.
"Definitely – I love everything about the place," he said. "It's a really good club with good people, but I need to do the business on the pitch."
Asked if he has a clause to activate another year, he said: "I don't know – I'd have to look through the contract. I'm not really thinking about it."
Trialist Jamie Hamill impressed on Tuesday. The 29-year-old played at right wing-back but has been a defensive midfielder in recent years during two spells at Kilmarnock either side of a stint at Hearts. "He was outstanding," said Dawes.
