Jamie Hamill still on trial at Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury Town are continuing to run the rule over Scottish trialist Jamie Hamill.

The versatile 29-year-old, who is a free agent so can sign outside the transfer window, is training with Town and impressed in the Shropshire Senior Cup win over AFC Telford United a week ago.

Hamill has scored 35 goals in 273 games in Scotland in two spells with Kilmarnock ,sandwiching a stint with Hearts where he was team-mates with Town midfielder Ian Black.

Manager Micky Mellon has been impressed with Hamill, who has played much of his career as a defensive midfielder but can also operate at right-back or wing-back.

The Town boss said: "You could definitely see he's very experienced. He's played a lot of football at a very good level.

"He's lacking match fitness, he'd be one of the first to admit that. But it's encouraging what we saw last week. He's trained on Thursday morning and did fine again.

"He can play defensive midfielder, right-back or wing-back. He's done that very well throughout his career. You can sign players if they haven't been with a club before the deadline, so he could sign."

Described as a 'fiery character', last May Hamill was involved in an on-pitch bust-up with Kilmarnock team-mate Josh Magennis.

It came during a 4-1 win over Partick Thistle, after reacting angrily to a tackle by his colleague that he thought put their side under pressure.

The pair pushed their heads together before being separated by team-mates and the referee took no action.

At Hearts, Hamill was involved in an altercation while celebrating scoring a penalty which earned him a four-match ban.

Having been shoved by Ross County player Yann Songo'o – who had a trial at Shrewsbury earlier this season – he then barged into Staggies manager Derek Adams.

That saw the Ross County boss fall over and Hamill received a second yellow card.

Mellon added: "We'll continue to keep trying to to get to know as much about players as we can before we commit to them. We also have other trialists in at the minute."

Hamill played 18 games for Kilmarnock this season and was last involved on January 30 in a 1-0 home defeat to Hamilton Academicals.
