Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst recalls Dom Smith from Barrow loan spell
Shrewsbury Town chief Paul Hurst is looking for young defender Dom Smith to catch his eye after the Welsh international was recalled from a loan spell at Barrow.
The 20-year-old Salop academy graduate had been spending time with National League outfit Barrow.
But, following his Welsh international call-up to the under-19 squad, Smith struggled to fight his way back into the matchday team at Holker Street.
With Ryan McGivern suspended for the weekend's League One clash at Southend and Olly Lancashire one carrying a slight injury, Hurst is keen to take a look at the youngster.
"It's to give us more options for the weekend. We have Ryan McGivern suspended and Olly Lancashire out, there are a couple of other defenders with knocks that aren't definite for the weekend.
"It's a new manager, I would've thought Dom would be happy to be back and, in terms of him being here, trying to impress myself and Chris and force his way into our plans.
"It will have done him good. He's only a young player, Dom's someone that first came to my attention probably four years ago.
"I saw him play in a reserve game at Chesterfield and he did extremely well. I made a note of his name back then.
"I kept an eye on it and he's certainly grown! He played against us last season. He trained yesterday and his attitude was excellent. It's what we want - he's obviously a young player - but a very hungry one."
