Former Grimsby boss Hurst was unveiled as Salop's successor to Micky Mellon at the beginning of the week and was making his League One bow as a manager at Southend United today.

He took the reins from Coyne, who was in temporary charge at Greenhous Meadow during the club's 18-day search for a new man at the helm.

Welshman Coyne, who had goalkeeping spells with Tranmere, Grimsby and Middlesbrough across a 22-year playing career, oversaw four defeats during a difficult time of transition for the club, who sit bottom of League One.

And Hurst was keen to praise Coyne for completing a 'thankless' task.

"Danny's been great since I've come in," said the new boss. "He's helped me settle in, him and Skitty (physio Chris Skitt). And for Danny in particular, it's been a pretty thankless task. I think it's been difficult for him, there's no getting away from that. All I can judge him on is how he's been with us and that's been first class."
