Wolves have rejected a second bid from Celtic for Leigh Griffiths – as Leon Clarke edged closer to a bitter exit at Coventry, it emerged today.

It's understood Wolves have dismissed an offer of around £500,000 rising to £750,000 for their 13-goal top scorer. Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell and Wolves counterpart Jez Moxey were back and forth trying to thrash out a deal in the lead-up to last night's 3-0 win at Oldham.

"There's been more talk and we'll see where that goes," said Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett, who had Griffiths as an unused substitute last night.

Jackett hinted he expects the deal to go through before Friday's 11pm deadline. Asked if Griffiths will be still at Wolves on Friday night, Jackett said: "I don't know – Celtic are very interested and their manager's comments seem to give him very high praise."

Meanwhile, Griffiths's potential replacement, Coventry's Leon Clarke, appeared to be edging closer to the exit door. The 28-year-old was heavily criticised for letting his team-mates down after pulling out of last night's 2-0 defeat to Leyton Orient citing a foot injury.

Sky Blues boss Steven Pressley said: "We were let down by an individual last night.

"It looks more likely he'll leave – he gets his wish."
