It is more frustration for boss Smith, who already has Steve Jagielka (arm), Justin Marsden (metatarsal), Richard Teesdale (foot), Indy Khela (shin) and Gary Birch (ankle) on the sidelines.
He also revealed Carl Rodgers needs a hernia operation, but will continue to play for as long as possible.
"Our injuries are becoming a farce," said an irritated Smith. "Jamie has got a suspected cracked rib and he's going to hospital today.
"It's a massive blow if he is out. Jamie just needs a run of games. He's a key player for us and I'd say he's one of the the best midfielders in the division. We'll just have to wait and see what they say, but I fear the worst. We haven't moaned about our injuries all year, but it's becoming ridiculous.
"The lads that are playing are being stretched to the limit. People say we should just go out and sign someone, but we've got a budget here and it's very difficult."
Smith admitted he was after defensive reinforcements, especially after some of the basic errors at Barrow.
"Saturday was the worst the defence have played all season and they don't warrant a shirt for this weekend on that performance, but all the injuries mean they've got no pressure on them.
"I must have been on the phone to eight clubs yesterday desperately trying for a defender but it's not easy.
"The first call I made was to Lee Sinnott (the new Port Vale boss). He's got five players available but one has gone to Shrewsbury, one to Bury and three have turned down Grimsby so what chance have we got?"
