Telford's Nom Dairy buyout is good for Muller

Muller's buy-up of the £40 million Nom Dairy in Telford will complement its existing premises in Market Drayton, the company said today.

The dairy giant has struck a deal to take on the Donnington Wood site after Nom said it had failed to make headway in the yoghurt market since it opened in 2009.

But the move, announced yesterday, will not affect the company's existing operation in Market Drayton, the company said, adding that it actually provided further evidence of its bold expansion plans.

The Telford dairy, which employs 150, will make products under other firms' brands, with the focus on developing relationships with supermarket chains. Market Drayton, employing around 1,000 on the Tern Valley Business Park, will continue to produce Muller products.

Muller director Graeme Jack said: "The two facilities in Telford and Market Drayton are doing quite different things, and Minsterley is very focused on chilled desserts that is quite a separate product line again. At present a lot of private-label yoghurts are made outside the UK. This will hopefully be good news for farmers not just in Shropshire but also across the country."
