Shrewsbury-based car dealer chain back in top 100 list
Car dealership chain Greenhous has been named among the country's biggest privately-owned companies.
The Shrewsbury-based chain, which has dealerships all over the region, achieved sales of £673 million in 2013, according to the Sunday Times Top Track 100 table, up 15 per cent on the year before.
Its profits clocked in at £4 million.
That was enough to bring the company back into the top 100 at 91st place, after dropping out of the list last year.
Alliance Boots was once again the biggest private firm in the Midlands, with sales of £23 billion and profit of £1.5 billion, while Phones 4U, which was established just over the Shropshire border, ranked 42nd.
Engineering group Doncasters, which has a base in Shrewsbury, was 85th with sales of £740 million and profits of £134 million.
Other big names on the list were Wilkinson's, bet365, and Virgin Trains.
Greenhous, owned by Derek Passant, Kerry Finnon and Mike Pawson, was the smallest Midlands employer on the list, with 771 staff.
At the top end, Boots employs 76,769 people, and Birmingham's 2 Sisters Food Group has 22,987.
