Shrewsbury jobs axe fear at car parts firm Stadco
Nearly 30 jobs are at risk at one of Shropshire's largest car parts suppliers. Stadco Automotive has announced 28 potential redundancies at its UK headquarters in Shrewsbury.
The move comes as a direct result of the production of some vehicle models coming to an end, say bosses.
They say they hope to transfer some employees from the Harlescott Lane factory to its Telford branch to reduce the number of job losses.
Some of the employees who have received redundancy notices have clocked up decades of service with the company, which also has branches in Llanfyllin, Powys, and West Bromwich.
Vernon Bushell, Shropshire councillor for Harlescott said: "I am bitterly disappointed at the prospect of anyone losing their job and I feel very sorry for anyone that loses their job.
"I hope Stadco can accommodate the people in another part of the business and find a solution."
Micky Tuff, Unite union's regional officer said: "I'm disappointed with any redundancies which take place in Shropshire. I will be meeting with the company on Thursday to see if we can mitigate any of the job losses."
A spokesman for Stadco said: "As a direct result of production for a number of vehicle models coming to an end, Stadco has announced a planned reduction in its Shrewsbury workforce in line with forecast business demand. Stadco has stated that 28 positions are at risk of redundancy.
"Stadco will work closely with the employees and union to reduce the impact and its Telford plant is actively recruiting to support its growth, so it will seek to transfer as many people as possible into suitable roles.
"Stadco has begun consultations and will update employees on the process and timing accordingly. It is aiming to minimise the impact to all of those involved in this decision."
