The Fox Inn in Church Street is the fourth acquisition for the Staffordshire-based Cheadle Free Houses, which says it wants to restore it to its former glory.

Peter Mozelewski , from the pub company, said he would like to see The Fox specialise in quality local beers and celebrate its history.

"We are now embarking on a major refurbishment, retaining and restoring original features," he said. "There is a lot to do and it is likely that the work will take several months.

"Although the pub is going to be closed for that time we wanted to assure local people that it will be reopening.

"The building is, I believe, 400 years old and we have already made some discoveries that make us believe that there is much of the original building covered by plaster and mock beams.

"It has obviously been popular over the years but sadly recently seems to have lost its way a little. We want to give it some 'TLC' and a focus to bring it back to life."
