August date for Aldi's Newport store to open

Aldi will open its new supermarket in Newport at the end of August.

The store will welcome customers from 8am on August 27.

Work on the 1,745 sq metre store at Audley Avenue, opposite Countrywide Stores, off the A41, finally began in January with the demolition of the former Focus DIY.

Now the building stands nearly complete, with just the inside to be filled and the car park and landscaping to be finished.

Bosses at Aldi have been busy holding recruitment days and attending events in and around the town.

There are still a number of jobs available and the firm has already filled 30 vacancies.

Richard Khodabakhsh, area manager, said: "We're looking forward to the opening of our new store.

"Further details will be released in due course and we're looking forward to announcing additional community initiatives in the coming weeks."

The site had stood empty for about two years after Focus closed.

Now Newport business leaders hope the site will help boost the local economy.

Patrick Beech, chairman of Newport Chamber of Commerce, said: "We have said as a group this is what we wanted, a low-cost supermarket in the town. That is a good site because it has been derelict for a couple of years and they have completely demolished it for a brand new store.

"It will create jobs and footfall round there and it will complement Countrywide Stores. We hope that other firms will follow Aldi to the area. It is better than people going to Donnington, for example, to shop. Ideally we wanted it in the High Street but this is not a million miles away and I think it will do well."
