More than £500,000 has been spent on transforming the former Morrisons supermarket in Turreff Avenue, Donnington, into the discount convenience store.

The 13,000sq ft new store will open its doors for the first time on Saturday.

It comes after it was announced earlier this year that the site was one of 10 "unprofitable" Morrisons stores across the country to be shut.

Joe Morris, operations director at Home Bargains, said: "We're thrilled to be launching our second store in Telford and look forward to welcoming both new and existing customers through the doors."

The Telford Morrisons store only opened in 2011. A group of parents launched an online petition in a bid to try and save it but this attempt failed.

The Donnington store stands on the site of the former Champion Jockey pub. That was demolished to make way for a Netto, but the branch later closed down and reopened as a Morrisons supermarket.

The opening on Saturday includes a special appearance from Dave, one of the stars of popular children's films, Minions and Despicable Me, between 11am and 1pm.
