Aldi has vacancies at its stores in Shrewsbury, Newport, Wellington and branches in Telford. It is also recruiting at its two Oswestry shops, including the Shrewsbury Road store which opened in December.

The chain's apprenticeship scheme, which will see more than 700 apprentices recruited throughout the UK, has now launched and people are encouraged to apply by October.

It comes after business secretary Sajid Javid yesterday announced £10 million in additional funding for degree apprenticeships.

Degree apprenticeships between universities, colleges and companies enable apprentices to combine academic study with gaining practical experience in the workplace.

Scores of companies were represented at a recent jobs fair at Telford International Centre, which showed hundreds of people the potential opportunities available in the world of work.

Jon Wilson, regional managing director at Aldi, said: "The Aldi apprenticeship scheme has been hugely successful in delivering hundreds of roles for dedicated people nationwide in the four years since we launched the scheme.

"We're now looking for a record number of candidates to join one of the most dynamic and fast-growing retailers in the UK, with a proven track record in developing and progressing its staff.

"Aldi's apprentices are given real responsibility from day one, with the opportunity to learn about the business from a grassroots level, and we expect our recruits to progress to a management position with us."

Aldi store apprentices are trained in all aspects of retail management during their three-year course, which features a mixture of in-store and theory work.

The scheme offers store assistant training in year one and store management training in years two and three, with a salary of £5.40 per hour, rising to £7.85 per hour.

Apprentices also receive a retail apprenticeship level three qualification.

By the end of the scheme, the most successful store apprentices will have the opportunity to progress to the position of assistant store manager with a starting salary of £30,000.

Applications for the scheme should be submitted via Aldi's recruitment website at www.aldirecruitment.co.uk/apprentice and successful candidates will be asked to attend an interview.

Store training will be delivered by Aldi's apprenticeship provider, First 4 Skills.

Apprentices need to be at least 16 and will work a 30-hour week over five days.
