About a dozen traders took advantage for the first day of trading.

Pop-up Pitch, launched by county entrepreneur Fay Easton in collaboration with the Wellington Market Company, will see local traders able to rent stalls on an ad hoc basis instead of being tied down to a lease.

Twenty new trader stands have been created in space between Market Street and Rowland Gate in the town for casual use.

The first day of trading on Tuesday saw a wide range of stalls, from a hot Chinese food stall to one selling reconditioned and repaired mobile phones.

Esther Worboys, sales and marketing manager for Wellington Market Company, said the first day had been a huge success.

"It was fantastic and it was great to see so many people in the market," she said. "It's a new venture for us, but it's one that makes good business sense on a number of levels.

"Firstly, it gives people the chance to try out a market stall on a casual basis, with the hope that long-term they will become regular traders for us.

"Secondly, it ensures there is always a changing offer of goods for customers, which is good for any market."

The pitches will be available on Fridays and Saturdays.
