The Whitchurch-based business saw turnover increase by 5.75 per cent to £33 million, and pre-tax profits were 76.7 per cent up at £4 million in the year to December 31.

The latest improvement in the company's performance comes on top of a six per cent rise in turnover the previous year, demonstrating the haulage and storage business's ongoing growth.

Grocontinental's managing director Linda Grocott said: "We have delivered a very good set of figures which are as a result of timely investment in new facilities over the last few years. Additionally, profits have been boosted from the disposal of assets.

"Our aim is to continue our strategy of reinvesting profits back into our business to ensure we remain competitive in our industry and to secure long-term sustainability for our business, and secure local jobs.

"We have recently started construction of what will become our largest warehouse with 32,000 chilled spaces."

The latest development will create around 15 new jobs at the company, and will take Grocontinental's overall storage capacity to 197,000 pallet spaces.

Last year the number of people employed by the north Shropshire company increased from 325 to 342, and the opening of the new facility looks like it will further add to that tally.

It is anticipated that the new warehouse will be used to house existing customers' dairy products, predominately cheese.

Grocontinental has also recently invested in a significant upgrade to its warehouse management system.

The enhanced technology has been developed by the company's in-house IT team.
