Big new Aldi plan is revealed for Wellington
A bigger Aldi could be on the way to Wellington under new plans by the supermarket giant.
The scheme involves demolishing the existing Aldi store in Groom's Alley in Wellington and replacing it with a modern and larger supermarket, creating about 10 new jobs.
The proposal will involve creating wider aisles, more tills and improving lighting throughout the store. The firm said the store is currently too small, with customers struggling through aisles with their trolleys when it is congested.
More than 100 car parking spaces will also be created as part of the plans, including eight disabled spaces, seven parent and child spaces, eight cycle spaces and four dedicated staff spaces.
A statement submitted in support of the application said: "The purpose of the proposal is to ensure that the store is fit for purpose – modern and offers an enhanced customer environment.
"This has been achieved by incorporating wider aisles with more tills and improved lighting throughout the store.
"The store is currently too small and congested when busy, with customers struggling through aisles with their trolleys. The new store will free up space so customers can manoeuvre through the store more freely.
"Additional space is also required for new refrigeration display units as a response to increased demand for fresh produce including dairy, meat and fish. These improvements will future proof the store by improving the quality of the building without impacting on prices."
The statement adds: "The proposed development will provide an enhanced shopping choice for local residents, improved access to high-quality, a greater range of deeply discounted products and help reduce travel distances for shoppers who currently choose to visit larger, more modern Aldi stores further afield such as at Newport by improving the retail offer in Wellington.
"A range of roles are required in Aldi's stores including store managers, store assistants, caretakers and warehouse staff. The new store will include positions within these areas for new staff."
