The hotel, on the edge of the town, has been given permission to add 39 new bedrooms, giving it 98 in all.

The company said up to eight new jobs will be created.

Shropshire Council officers who approved the plans, said the hotel is part of the Oswestry Gateway Scheme which will also include a pub, restaurants, employment and leisure uses.

"The extended hotel will generate additional income locally through the increased spending of visitors on goods, services, businesses and attractions in the area," a planning report said.

It said that Oswestry town had just three other hotels providing 54 bedrooms.

The North Shropshire and Oswestry visitor economy strategy identified increasing visitor stays as a key priority for the tourist economy.

Oswestry Town Council said it is in favour of the extension to the Premier Inn saying it would boost the economy of the town.

Jamie Baker, Premier Inn spokesman, said: "We are delighted that our extension to the Oswestry Premier Inn has been granted planning permission. "We are looking forward to investing further in the town, and as well as allowing us to welcome more guests, this hotel expansion will also create up to eight new jobs.

"We're now working through some of the construction details with the developer and hope to have those finalised soon, so that the works can begin."
