The scheme will see two new dispatch areas be created at the Market Drayton site as well as associated alterations to the existing road layout.

A planning document submitted on behalf of Muller says the proposed works will not have any additional impact on people living nearby.

The firm has not released any details about whether the plans will create new jobs.

Muller spokeswoman Michelle Simpson said: 'We have long highlighted our commitment to investing to build Britain's biggest and best dairy company.

"This application is to further upgrade and develop the capabilities of our butter making facility at Market Drayton to reflect growing demand for our products in the retail and food manufacturing sectors."

The company has invested extensively in Shropshire in recent years, taking over Nom's dairy in Telford, opening a desserts manufacturing site at the former Uniq site in Minsterley, and opening the butter plant beside its headquarters in Market Drayton.

Recently it announced the price it will pay farmers for milk from November will increase by 1.5p per litre to 20.94ppl. In addition, Muller's non-aligned dairy farmers will benefit from a valuable retailer supplement, estimated to be an additional 2ppl from next month.
