The Co-op in Wenlock Road threw open its doors for the first time on Friday.

Children from Mereside Primary School were among the guests of honour at the official opening, helping cut the ribbon and launch the new Co-op for the community scheme.

The store, which is located on Shrewsbury's business park, has a focus on fresh, healthy foods and meal ideas, with Costa coffee, customer car parking, an in-store bakery and hot food.

Store manager Stuart Carpenter said it had been a great first day.

He said: "We have had a superb reaction from the local community. Our ambition is to establish the store as a community hub, a real asset locally, and we are looking forward to contributing to local life and serving the community.

"It has been a great opening day."

The new store will bring a funding boost to community groups through the Co-op's new membership scheme.

Co-op members receive a five per cent reward on purchases of Co-op own-branded products and services, with a further one per cent going to local causes and groups to make a difference in the community.

Groups set to initially benefit include The Shrewsbury Ark, Shrewsbury Furniture Scheme and the Bomere Heath Sunshine Pre-School.

New good causes to benefit from the scheme will be selected in the future.

Members can choose which of the good causes they wish to support, and money will be raised over a six month period, before a new set of local good causes will benefit – for further information visit coop.co.uk/membershipCo-op opens to
