Co-op steps in to help after Budgens crisis threatens 60 Shropshire jobs

The Co-op has offered to help find jobs for all those affected after a supermarket business collapsed into administration.

Since the sale to The Food Retailer Operations Ltd in 2016, 36 former Co-op sites had been trading as Budgens.

It was announced on February 10 that the firm The Food Retailer Operations Ltd had been put into administration.

Helen Webb, director of HR, Food Retail, at the Co-op, said: "We're sorry that the company has gone in to administration and we want to do everything that we can to assist our former colleagues.

"If no buyer can be found for the stores, we will make every effort to help find alternative employment for those affected.

"In addition, we have protected the pension rights of former colleagues and are ensuring former Co-op colleagues receive the full redundancy pay they would have been entitled to when working at the Co-op."

A total of 872 Budgens jobs are at risk across the UK.

They include the stores in High Street, Newport, and Ludlow's Upper Galdeford which both continue to operate until their futures are decided. The branch based in Bridgnorth is safe because it is operated as a separate franchise.
