Sports Direct in Shrewsbury: Plans tabled for new store at Meole Brace Retail Park

Plans to build a new Sports Direct store on a busy retail park that could help create 125 jobs have been submitted to Shropshire Council.

This would create a total of 125 full-time positions.

An extra lane would be added to the exit of the retail park on to the Hereford Road roundabout as part of the work, with improved signs and lane markings on the second internal roundabout.

The proposal will now be considered by Shropshire Council's planning committee.

But the plans have met with a number objections from townspeople who claim that the scheme would see an increase in traffic on an already overstretched road system.

Taking to the council's planning portal, Amanda Cartwright said: "I believe this proposal should be declined as another unit will increase staff and customer traffic within the car park and accessing and exiting the retail park.

"It is well known that the there are already lengthy delays and traffic jams on and around the retail park at busy times and further traffic will exacerbate this."

Elly Stokes added: "I object to the addition of another unit at the retail park as the access is not sufficient for the units already in place.

"Every Saturday and Sunday, traffic queues from the entrance of the retail park to Meole Island and takes forever to clear. Trying to leave the retail park is also a nightmare as the one small roundabout by the petrol station is too small to move on to. The roads and parking on the retail park are in poor condition with pot holes and high speed bumps damaging cars on a regular basis."

Jane Pittaway also objects to the scheme and said: "This proposal will increase commercial, staff and consumer traffic within the car park and accessing and exiting the retail park. This in turn will impact even further on current unacceptable lengthy delays and traffic jams on and around the retail park, including backing up to Meole Island and Dobbies island at peak times.I do not consider that adding a third exit lane would in anyway help the current problems if that is in any way part of this or other applications."
