The bank has said said it will be closing its Welshpool branch on September 27, its Builth Wells branch on October 10 and its Machynlleth branch on October 12.

NatWest blamed the move on a fall in customers using branches linked to major changes to the way people do their banking, with online transactions rising by more than 400 per cent and mobile transactions increasing by 1,350 per cent, between 2010 and 2015, the firm said today.

Sean Palmer, a spokesman for NatWest, said the firm has taken the "difficult decision" to close the branches.

He said: "We are communicating with our customers affected by the closures and proactively contacting vulnerable and regular branch customers.

"We have listened closely to feedback from local communities and have extended the time between announcing our decision and the branch closures to six months. This has been done in order to ensure our customers have time to consider the right banking options for them."

No branches in Shropshire are affected by the cull, the firm have confirmed.
