The vet gave a talk to students at the university, near Newport, to mark the setting up of a new course.

The first ever students to take the Wildlife Conservation and Natural Resource Management course also had the chance to ask the TV star questions after his talk.

Around 200 students and staff listened to Mr Leonard's 40 minute talk, which touched on subjects such as how to work best alongside wildlife.

Janine Heath, from the university, said: "We invited Steve to come and give a talk as we welcome our first ever students to take the new wildlife conservation BSc.

"He gave a talk for about 40 minutes and then held a Q&A session after. The students asked him mainly about his thoughts on the impact we have on wildlife and human interference in the world.

"They also asked if he dreamed he would ever be working on television when he was training to be a vet."

Mr Leonard was given a tour where he met a friendly boa constrictor, from the companion animal house on campus, which he posed for pictures with.

He visited all the facilities the university has to offer, including taking a look at the new veterinary services centre which is currently being built.

Leonard first appeared on TV screens in Vets' School, which was quickly followed up with Vets in Practice.

He has also appeared in Vets In The Wild, Incredible Animal Journeys, Orang-utan Diary and Safari Vets' School.

Leonard currently runs Leonard Brothers Veterinary Centre in Whitchurch.
