Round Tablers gather at last event to celebrate Newport club's achievements

More than 50 years after Newport Round Table was formed, and three years after it was wound-up, former members gathered one last time to celebrate its achievements.

Between 1959 and 2011 the branch raised thousands of pounds for charities in the town.

And although the club continually tried to recruit new members over the decades, eventually they admitted defeat and the branch folded in 2011.

But one final night of celebration was held at Newport Rugby Club on Friday for all past members and the cash raised was donated to Newport Cottage Care Centre.

Former club chairman Steve Woodhouse said: "Membership declined below a practical number for the organisation to continue. Despite the efforts of the older past members and the 41 Club to recruit younger men, the club has finally been closed.

"Social and fundraising activities have contributed a great deal to the town."
