Telford Register Office in Wellington said five couples had met with registrars, while Shropshire Council has had one couple register and more couples make bookings for later dates.

The registrations have come after the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act was agreed last year.

Couples were allowed to register from Thursday and the first same sex weddings will be allowed to take place from March 29.

Kerry Catlin, superintendent registrar at Wellington, said the office had received steady interest in same sex couples wishing to be married.
