Poll: Would you get in a driverless Google car?

It is the future of motoring – a car without a steering wheel.

Google is making 100 prototype cars that drive themselves – and therefore do not need a wheel or brake and accelerator pedals. Instead, there are buttons for go and stop.

Sergey Brin, co-founder of the technology titan, told a Southern California tech conference that a combination of sensors and computing power takes control of the driving.

This prototype is the first Google will have built for itself but it will not be for sale, and Google is unlikely to go deeply into car manufacturing.

In a blog post, Google emphasised partnering with other firms.

Some researchers have raised downsides to driverless cars, saying they could make traffic worse as people accept longer commutes as they do not have to drive themselves.
