It's a perfect storm for Shropshire's mud run

While most people tried to take cover from the elements at the weekend, more than 300 athletes found the conditions just to their liking as they took part in the Shropshire Mud Run.

The weekend's storms created perfect conditions for the event, which took place in the grounds of the Lilleshall Hall National Sports Centre on Saturday.

The six-mile race featured participants making their way along a muddy woodland track, through waist-high water bunkers and over a number of obstacles.

The first men home were Tim Davies, from Welshpool, David Anderson, from Shrewsbury, and Paul Richards, from Wellington. The race was round three in the 2014 Shropshire Mud Run Series.

Many competitors took part in the competition in fancy dress.

Organisers have hailed the event a success and believe the wet weather encouraged more people to take part. They said all money raised from the car park is going to the charity Children With Cancer UK. Up to 30mm of rain an hour fell in some places across the UK – more than the average monthly rainfall for the whole of July.

Shropshire saw 29.4mm.

Temperatures are likely to soar again this week, with the mercury possibly topping 30C (86F) for a three-day spell from Wednesday.
