The cat escaped through the window of his home in St Georges and got stuck between two chimney pots.

Three fire appliances had to be despatched to the home on Urban Villas to help free Mr Nelson, named after former South African president Nelson Mandela, after owner Paula Quinn's attempts to free him failed.

Mrs Quinn, who lives in the house with her son Stephen, said: "He's actually an indoor cat because my other cat is allergic to fleas. I'd opened all the windows in the lovely weather. He climbed out of the window, up the window frame and managed to get onto the roof. When he got to the chimney, he got stuck between the two circular pots at the top. He was totally wedged between the two."

Mrs Quinn's neighbour was in the garden during the drama last Thursday and noticed one-year-old Mr Nelson's brave escape attempt.

He called Mrs Quinn who tried coaxing the cat down, but to no avail.

The 42-year-old explained: "He was crying frantically.

At one point he was panting so much we got the hosepipe and totally soaked him so that at least he could lick his fur to get some water."

Fire crews from Telford Central arrived in three appliances, due to the difficult access position of the cat.

Mrs Quinn said: "The fire service were there in 20 minutes and they were absolutely fantastic. They used a big crane thing to get him down.

"I was absolutely flabbergasted. So I just wanted to say a big thank you."
