Wem Carnival roping in entertainment
Thousands of people will be taking to the streets of a town in Shropshire this weekend for its annual carnival.
Floats and music will feature in this year's event in Wem which will take place on Saturday.
Parades will be held through the main streets in the town at 1.30pm and 7.45pm, while activities will be held on Wem Recreation Ground.
Organisers are hoping to attract more than 2,000 people and are keeping their fingers crossed for warm and sunny weather. They have spent the last few months trying to raise about £10,000 to cover the costs of putting on the extravaganza.
Sue Holliday, secretary of the Wem Carnival Committee, said: "The day commences with the local Taiko drummers, Kayobi Taiko, who will be drumming in the town square at 11am.
"Afternoon entertainment will be on the carnival field, which is by the swimming pool.
"The afternoon starts with the crowning of the queen followed by the judging of the fancy dress. There will be a full programme of music by the participating bands and, for the first time, a children's arena where audience participation is encouraged with various styles of dancing and entertainment as well as some clowning around.
"There will be a huge variety of stalls and refreshments for all to enjoy."
Mrs Holliday said the carnival queen this year is eight-year-old Evie Kiernan and the princesses are Erin Wilcox and Imi Balachandran.
Entrance is by donation with the chance for over-16s to win a TV.
