Oswestry's record-breaking runner Amy Hughes gives little Izzy's fund a marathon boost
The achievements of Shropshire's record-breaking marathon runner Amy Hughes have led to a surge in donations towards a local charity.
Amy, from Cabin Lane, Oswestry, has raised £40,000 for charity by running 53 marathons in 53 days, but hopes to be able to bring in even more sponsorship over the next few days.
Since the start of the challenge Amy, 26, has been collecting donations for the Isabelle Lottie Foundation online, in buckets along the route, and by selling T-shirts bearing the 53:53 logo.
She said: "We are getting pretty close to the target – I am currently on about £40,000. Please, please keep donating.
"My target was £53,000 to stick with the 53 theme, but really I want to raise as much as I possibly can. Let's try and reach the £53,000 for Izzy's foundation."
The Isabelle Lottie Foundation was set up by three-year-old Izzy's parents Gareth and Rebecca Wynne, from Wrexham. The foundation aims to raise awareness of early diagnosis of brain tumours in children and young adults, as well as support families of young children with brain tumours.
Mr and Mrs Wynne set up the foundation after Izzy was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour called medulloblastoma in May last year.
Mrs Wynne said: "This led to 12 months of treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. When she had her surgery it left her paralysed on the right side of her body. She has since re-learnt to walk, even running with Amy for the last little bit of her marathon in Oswestry."
Although Amy's challenge seemed unachievable to many, Mrs Wynne said she never doubted that Amy would complete it. "From the moment we met Amy there was no doubt that she would do it, as long as she didn't get injured. She's raised a phenomenal amount of money and put the charity on a national platform. She's really amazing."
