Fee-fi-fo-fum! The Iron Giant comes to Telford

This imposing giant metal figure has appeared outside a Telford primary school.

The Iron Giant, made by metal sculptor Roj Williams and inspired by the 1999 film of the same name, stands guard outside Newdale Primary and Nursery School in Telford.

Headteacher Rachel Cook said the idea was to make something which represents the school's vision statement, which encourages pupils to stay strong.

She said: "After discussing this with the pupils they came up with the idea of a superhero.

"We then found Roj Williams, who is a local metal sculptor, who was willing to make our statue. So That is how we came up with the idea of the Iron Giant.

"Roj has been fantastic, he came in and spent a day with the pupils showing them how he makes everything and the pupils were just fascinated by it." she said.

"The statue really is something else – I think a lot of the pupils have been walking into things to try and get a look at it. We have had so many nice comments about it, which is great."

It took Mr Williams several months to make the iron statue.

The art work is still yet to be named, and one lucky pupil will have the honour of doing so once the school holds a competition in the near future.
